Christian Funeral Service – Importance And Rituals

For a god-fearing Christian, a funeral service is a celebration of the soul’s journey into the after life. This is the primary reason why such services are alleviating as they are looked upon as an assertion of the belief that the deceased has found a new home in God’s place.

Christianity considers death as an entry into new life, wherein people are freed from the world of suffering to the world of everlasting bliss. That the soul is enjoying the bliss of heaven and is residing with the Lord Himself is a comforting thought that lessens the severity of the trauma that death brings to the family members. The Christian funeral ceremonies are organized with the same spirit.

Generally, a pastor is the main officiator at a Christian funeral ceremony. The services are mostly held at the very church that the deceased used to visit when he was alive. Generally the services do not have casket, but when the service is being held inside a funeral home, caskets are very often present. A traditional Christian funeral service does not involve viewing of the dead body at the time of service.

The rituals in such a funeral service are similar to a memorial, in which devotional hymns and prayers are sung and lines from the Bible are read out. Then the pastor delivers a message and the attendees follow with a mass prayer.

Then the family and close friends share their sorrows with the group, and the attendees express their feelings and respect for the dead person and share their thoughts on how the deceased affected their lives and left a lasting void. These days, people also do a slideshow containing snapshots from the life of the dead person or play a video recording taken from the deceased’s lifetime.

The service finally ends with a short fellowship reception at the church, where food is served. A graveside service is not very common, though some Christian communities opt for that as well.
